The clients inherited the house from their parents, who were former farmers. The barn adjacent to the existing house was a dark and gloomy space with low ceilings and tiny windows, and was previously used as a home for their goats.
The project involved design of the barn area and integration with the adjacent house. The first step was to knock down the ceiling and connecting the two levels creating an impressive 6m tall ceiling height. Larger windows and doors were specified to maximise light. Custom beams were added for a rustic look and drama. The project which involved both the barn conversion and the renovation of the existing house took 2 years from planning to completion. LMK Studio were involved from inception to finish, acting as project manager, working remotely with planning officers, product suppliers and the site manager during build and visiting onsite to monitor progress.
Working around a tight budget (with priority given to major structural works) and the remote location, most of the furnishings are reclaimed and upcycled.
